Why do we love this case?
This is it. The finale. Fin. Role credits. No curtain call – Brightwater Vineyards are letting the sun set on what has been a truly profound contribution to New Zealand’s wine landscape. We’re equal parts excited and proud to be bringing you this vertical - ‘18, ‘19, ‘20 - that showcases winemaking mastery. Stylistically chardonnay is in flux; a more modern, euro iteration is becoming more pervasive, and the bigger, broader styles increasingly rare. For us, these wines sit at the perfect intersection of this evolution, borrowing richness and opulence from the old guard, and focused precision from the new. Here’s a chance (a last chance!) to capture the excellence of Brightwater for yourself - it’s a very limited run, so we recommend you get in quick.
2x Brightwater Lord Rutherford Barrique Chardonnay 2020
White — Chardonnay
Nelson — New Zealand
One of the hallmarks of great chardonnay is how it marries freshness with varietal richness. This is a masterclass in getting that balance right. The brightness of the acid finds every corner of your mouth in an all consuming way, but the pithy, whole citrus weight of the wine is tucked deftly in behind. Their is a thread of salinity and spice that runs throughout the Lord Rutherford vintages, giving them a savoury, moreish backbone. This is, once again, an outstanding wine that speaks to lofty heights Nelson, and New Zealand, can achieve when it comes to chardy. Compelling stuff.

Tasting Notes
2x Brightwater Lord Rutherford Barrique Chardonnay 2019
White — Chardonnay
Nelson — New Zealand
Fine boned - slightly more precise than the opulent '18 - with zesty citrus at the core of the citrus profile. A nutty almond dust gives varietal richness, maritime salinity provides a savoury edge, and sweet baking spices and vanilla mark the oak integration. You can see how it will develop - there is some flashes of burnt meringue amongst the butterscotch goodness. The finish is lasting and underscored by resolute acidity - chardonnay lovers rejoice at this delight.

Tasting Notes
2x Brightwater Lord Rutherford Barrique Chardonnay 2018
White — Chardonnay
Nelson — New Zealand
Brightwater Vineyards might as well be Kiwi for 'pure elegance' - the wines show such finesse and deftness, perfectly integrated acid, and fruit that is so profound you've half a mind to think they've added a few apricots and peaches in the crush. Marked by stone fruit, grapefruit, and lemon flesh with a bit of toffee and burnt apple lurking nearby. The palate is where it really comes alive. The wine is rich and broad, but the acid is such that the palate never feels lumbering or bogged down - indeed it's quite energetic and insistent. The 2018 is looking wonderful right now, but it's got enough in it for a few years cellaring yet.
