Meet Champagne Winemaker Patrick Boivin
Discover a Hidden Gem in the Vallée de la Marne
When people think of Champagne, the big houses like Ruinart, Moët & Chandon or Veuve Clicquot often come to mind. But beyond the grandeur of the grandes marques lies a world of grower Champagne—small, family-owned domaines producing Champagne with precision, soul, and a deep respect for terroir.
Patrick Boivin, a celebrated Champagne grower in Épernay, is one such producer. With just 6 hectares of vineyard in the Vallée de la Marne, Boivin crafts artisanal Champagne that stands apart for its personality, detail, and connection to the land.

“I was brought up in the cult of the vine. I’ve always been interested in the vinification of our grapes, in understanding the different cycles of the vine, our terroirs and grape varieties.” – Patrick Boivin
The Boivin Family Legacy: From Paris to the Premier Crus of Champagne
In 1978, Patrick and Marie-Madeleine Boivin left Paris behind and moved to Épernay, the beating heart of the Champagne region. Inspired by Marie-Madeleine’s grandfather, a winemaker in Cumières, the Boivins planted roots—literally and figuratively. Today, their two daughters are fully involved in the family estate, continuing a multi-generational tradition of winemaking.

Their vineyards span premier cru parcels in Pierry, Cumières, Damery, and Épernay, planted with the classic Champagne grapes—Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay. Their annual production is modest—just 30,000 bottles—allowing for a hands-on, detailed approach to every step of the winemaking process.

A Visit to the Boivin Champagne Estate in Épernay
The Boivin’s original winery in Épernay has been transformed into a tasting room and Champagne museum. Here, visitors are immersed in the Boivin family’s heritage—from the old stone walls of the barrel cave to historical winemaking tools like their manual bottling line and a horse-drawn plough once used in the vineyards.
Tasting Champagne at Boivin’s estate is an intimate experience, far from the crowds of the larger maisons. Every glass poured is steeped in the family’s story, showcasing both innovation and respect for tradition.

“Every year, we face new challenges—climatic, economic, societal and environmental—and for the next five years, we'll be tackling part of each.” – Patrick Boivin
Patrick Boivin’s Champagne Range: From House Cuvée to Clos 667
Boivin’s flagship blend, Champagne Icône, is bright, fresh, and expressive—perfect as an aperitif or to pair with seafood and lighter fare. The estate has recently expanded its range to include single-varietal, single-vineyard Champagnes, each one a tribute to the character of its grape and plot.

But the crown jewel of the lineup is Clos 667, a micro-production Champagne made from grapes grown in the front yard of the family’s home. Creamy, dense, and deeply layered, Clos 667 is a must-try for serious Champagne lovers visiting Épernay.

“The art of winemaking always asks questions of oneself, of nature, of our customers... Vintage is reflective of one's passions and questions of the moment. Above all it’s patience, and waiting for the reward.” – Patrick Boivin

Sometimes you've just got to let the experts do the talking... "Aromas of roasted peanuts with orange-peel and apple undertones. Dried peaches and oranges. Full-bodied with layers of fruit and fine tannins in the complex and enticing palate. So much going on. 80% pinot meunier and 20% chardonnay." - James Suckling, 94pts.
