What wine should you drink based on your star sign?

If you believe in such things, you can find a great deal written in the stars — so why not wine? Here’s your vino personality based on your zodiac sign!

Aries (March 21 to April 19)

Fiery Aries! Those born underneath the ram are bold, intense, and passionate, with zero qualms about expressing themselves directly and honestly. Another word sometimes used to describe these dynamos? Explosive. Just like a classic Aussie shiraz, we think.

Taurus (April 20 to May 20)

The bull begets personalities that marry quiet strength and loyalty with deep sensuality and creativity. Taurus signs are ambitious and focused, and they’re the ones you want in your corner when things start to get crazy, as their dependability will ensure they stick by your side no matter what. This come-what-may nature reflects the same dependability in cabernet franc, which can grow pretty much anywhere regardless of condition.

Gemini (May 21 to June 20)

Sometimes referred to as ‘two-faced,’ Geminis in fact exhibit dual personalities that can make it difficult for them to make up their minds. They’re extroverted, highly communicative, and versatile, and we think pinot noir is their perfect wine match. Extremely difficult to grow, pinot noir is a temperamental grape that’s fickle in nature but, when crafted by a talented winemaker, produces truly spectacular wines that are beautifully expressive — just like Geminis.

Cancer (June 21 to July 22)

Cancer is one of the most intuitive zodiac signs. Loyal and committed, they’re deeply in touch with their own emotions but are generally hesitant about letting others in until they’re sure those others are worth the time. Closed off and guarded until they open up a little? Sounds like a good ol’ oak-aged chardonnay to us! Oaked chardonnays typically offer heavier bodies and ripe stone fruit characters that seriously blossom with a little time to warm up in the glass.

Leo (July 23 to August 22)

Like Aries, Leo is fiery, confident, brash, and passionate. Self-assured and outgoing, these personalities are perhaps best known for their bravery and leadership abilities. They love being the centre of attention, but nothing loves the spotlight like a king — or in this case, the King of the Grapes: big, brassy cabernet sauvignon.

Virgo (August 23 to September 22)

Known for their detail-oriented nature, Virgos are perfectionists who approach each and every situation like it’s a logic problem. They’re methodical and practical in their approach to solving these problems, but they’re also gentle, supportive, and kind. You could call them unassuming but reliable — a lot like pinot gris, actually.

Libra (September 23 to October 22)

Did someone say balance and harmony? Represented by the scales symbol, Libras seek equality in all things. They’re gracious and charming and can occasionally become mired in indecision in their quest for that aforementioned balance — but when they find it, life is good. Really, really good, just like a zingy dry riesling, which shows the perfect balance between juicy ripe fruit flavours and bright acidity.

Scorpio (October 23 to November 21)

Scorpios are classically stubborn, brave, and intuitive. They’ve got ambition for days, which can often make them seem controlling and stubborn — but underneath that, they’re seriously enthralling and seductive. Like their namesake, they’ve got a hard exterior and a soft interior, just like a zinfandel. On the outside? Such a big red that it’s a bit intimidating. But give it a second, and you get all manner of soft fruit and suave smoothness.

Sagittarius (November 22 to December 21)

The thrill seekers of the zodiac, Sagittarians are commonly associated with humour and generosity. They’re possessed by wanderlust and are naturally gifted storytellers, and they err on the side of optimism. They’re also blunt and pointed, qualities that their extroverted personalities can cause others to perceive as arrogant — but in reality, they’re crowd-pleasers. We can think of something else that’s magnetic and crowd-pleasing but sometimes mistaken for being elitist: a red Bordeaux.

Capricorn (December 22 to January 19)

These December and January babies scream strength and determination to the nth degree. They value their independence, and they’re disciplined to the point of excess — meaning that though they’re usually successful, it often comes at the expense of a healthy work-life balance. All that being said, Capricorns have a youthful and playful streak amidst the seriousness. Sort of like a good malbec: spicy and fresh, with a firm and full-bodied foundation.

Aquarius (January 20 to February 18)

Aquarians are all about the freedom! Particularly thoughtful and independent, Aquarius signs are the hippies of the zodiac; they centre on originality and imagination, and their eccentricity ensures that no two are exactly alike — the star-sign embodiment of a pétillant-naturel, or pét-nat for short. Pét-nats are made by bottling juice that’s mid-fermentation and allowing the juice to complete fermentation in-bottle. They’re unique and unpredictable, just like Aquarians.

Pisces (February 19 to March 20)

Like Cancer, Pisces evinces a strong intuitive and psychic streak. Sensitive and naturally imbued with wisdom, they value kindness and compassion and are highly attuned to their emotions, which can occasionally cause them to favour blind optimism over realism. In other words, they view the world through rose-coloured glasses. The natural choice? Rosé, of course!
