Aka Victoria’s “food bowl”, you’ll find heaps of local delicious things in Gippsland - including some sublime, expressive cool-climate drops. It’s a big area to discover, but here are five cellar doors from around the region that we recommend, whenever and wherever you find yourself in Gippsland.

@cannibalcreek

Cannibal Creek Winery

In West Gippsland you’ll find Cannibal Creek - about an hour east of Melbourne, it’s a great launching point for a sip, swirl and snack adventure in the region. Take a flight through their cool climate specials, with the additional option of a “tutored” tasting experience where an expert will take you through a flight paired to a local grazing platter. Feeling like something more substantial? They’re also home to a restaurant, featuring a modern Australian menu with a focus on regional produce (including some sourced extremely close to home from their kitchen garden).

260 Tynong North Rd, Tynong North VIC 3813, open Friday - Sunday

@narkoojeewinery

Narkoojee Winery

Rated five-stars by Halliday, Narkoojee is about a two hour drive from Melbourne CBD. Highly rated cool climate wines are available on tasting - with nine of Narkoojee’s wines scoring 90 points and above in the 2023 Halliday Wine Companion. Book in at the cellar door to sip through a flight and hear about the history of the site (and the four generations of the winemaking Friend family who’ve made it home). A matched food/wine tasting experience is available with a couple of week’s notice; there’s also the option of booking into the restaurant next door, relaxing over a long lunch and looking out over the surrounding vineyard and native forest.

220 Francis Rd, Glengarry North VIC 3854, open Wednesday - Sunday

@carrajungestate

Carrajung Estate

In central Gippsland you’ll find the Carrajung Estate, formerly the site of Toms Cap Vineyard. They’ve recently released their first estate wine, and whilst their cellar door is currently being overhauled they’re offering tastings in their fabulously appointed restaurant. With a menu centered around locally sourced seasonal vegetables, cheeses and meat, it’s a real showcase of regional highlights paired to the wines they’re making. Want to make a weekend of it? Boutique accommodation is available on site if you’d like to make Carrajung Estate your base as you venture out into the region.

322 Lays Rd, Willung South VIC 3847, check website for opening hours.

@lightfootgippsland

Lightfoot Wines

Perched above the Mitchel River Valley (and atop the winery itself) the cellar door at Lightfoot & Sons offers some incredible sweeping views of the vineyard and surrounding countryside. It’s an intimate cellar door - so book ahead if you’d sooner sit inside - but for our money the best spots are out on the deck or their lawn, taking in the beauty of the region as you sample some pretty gorgeous wines. No restaurant here, but there is the option of local grazing platters paired to the wines on tasting.

717 Wy Yung-Calulu Road, Bairnsdale VIC 3875, open Friday - Sunday

@dirtythreewines

Dirty Three Wines

A relaxed and welcoming cellar door where the team at Dirty Three Wines lay on the option of either a guided tasting or self-guided flight through a selection of their cool climate gems, including pinot noir, chardonnay, riesling, sparkling & rosé. Light lunches are also on offer, focused on small plates highlighting local fare.

64 Cashin St, Inverloch VIC 3996, open Thursday - Sunday

There’s some of our faves, but hit us up on socials with your recommendations from the region.

Ps. make sure you check out the websites we’ve linked above before planning a visit to make sure you’ve got the up to date booking and opening info, especially around public holidays.
