Quinta do Sil Valdeorras Godello 2021
- Fresh, juicy
- Valdeorras DO
Godello: like the birth child of vermentino, chardonnay and chenin blanc. Can’t be a bad thing, can it? High acidity and always awash with mineral, oyster-shell qualities. Depending on the maker, this can go from being lean green, to fatty, waxy harmony. We could come up with a many adjectives to describe this wine, and many situations we’d find ourselves in while drinking it. We won’t list them all, but here’s a teaser: succulent, refreshing, interesting, majestic. Pair with scallops grilled with heaps of butter, or around the outdoor table with the best of friends. It stands the test of many situations, and excels in most. If there’s a theme song for the summer 0f ‘22, this has got to be it.

Region
Valdeorras DO
In the Galician region of north-western Spain lies The D.O. of Valdeorras, which translates directly to “Valley of Gold” and it’s producing some of the most notable, underrated whites in Spain. International demand is ever increasing, despite the comparatively small yields, and the liquid gold produced at altitudes of up to 700 meters comes predominantly in the form of godello (a variety known as verdelho in most areas outside of Spain). The unique climate and terroir helps to produce complex and rich, whites balanced by a firm acid backbone. Barrel fermented versions are held in particularly high regard and these styles hold incredible ageing potential. Other white varieties include albariño and torrontés as well as Portugese native - palomino. Rich, juicy reds made with mencia and grenache are also common and, although they lack the same status as their white counterparts, are also very successful.
