Jamie Kutch is at the forefront of a new breed of California pinot noir and chardonnay producers, chasing the essence of Burgundy rather than the typical fuller, richer Cali style. This means more structure, more acid, lower alcohol, restrained use of oak and some whole bunch pressing. This chardonnay is sourced from Trout Gulch, a vineyard located at 600 ft of elevation in the Santa Cruz mountains, less than 6km from the Pacific Ocean. It was planted 37 years ago with the Wente chardonnay clone, the most notable of the variety in California. The resulting wine is a beautiful interplay between striking intensity and structure. Wine nerds call this tension. It’s chalky, floral, lemony and minty with a stunny undercurrant of subtle salinity. If you thought all Cali chardonnay was buttery and rich, then this will certainly recalibrate your expectations.
“Coming from a site in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the 2017 Chardonnay Trout Gulch Vineyard is one of the more mineral-driven wines in the lineup and shows a terrific citrus and caramelized lime character as well as lots of white flowers and salty, rocky notes. It’s clean and medium-bodied, with bright acidity and a great finish. MATURITY 2021 - 2029”
