Julien Schaal Grand Cru Rangen Riesling 2019
According to Julien Schaal, the Rangen Grand Cru is considered the Montrachet of Alsace - wow! Big call, but we can’t disagree that this riesling has all of the layers, depth and class of a top Burgundy. The vineyard is ridiculously steep and the soil is volcanic, which you can see in the wine’s minerality. This vintage is a ripper and there’s fruit richness to counterbalance acidity, working well with the mineral drive of the wine. A textural palate, with pithy citrus and juicy fruit sweetness, there’s an almost limoncello type vibe about it. Balanced, concentrated and delicious.

“Smokiness and the purest note of Amalfi lemon combine into an intriguing aroma on this wine's nose. The palate is a picture of concentrated, ripe lemon, buffered by stony austerity and channeled into the sinuous intensity. Right now this wine brims with youthful fruit, but it also has stony depth. Drink 2025–2045.”
