Why do we love this wine?

This reminds me of my first sight unseen purchase, another aged Alsatian riesling. I remember nervously uncorking it, and pouring it shakily into a glass.

And then, wow. Pears, juicy juicy lemons, blood orange and rockmelon and a teensy bit of fresh apricot. Call me cynical, but I’d be amazed if there wasn’t a tickle of gris in here.

Spice is a background element, and neither is it quite as rich as expected. But it is deep, a bit coy. It’s not showing you everything, there are years of life in this yet. Ok, I’m going to suggest something here, and it might be controversial: decant this. Let it rock out with its socks out in a decanter, then get it in your glass and watch it change as it warms up slowly in your happy hands. That, or chuck it back in the cellar for a year or three. Make a ritual of pulling it out on an annual special occasion, and remember how it was the year before. I reckon this is just emerging from its chrysalis, and will be a beautiful butterfly in a mere few months, to watch fly over the coming few years.
