Deux Roches Pommard Carette Saint-Véran 2018
- Textural
- Burgundy
Deux Roches began in 1928 in a small village in the south of Burgundy. At the time, the family practiced polyculture in its farming, but goat’s cheese rather than wine was the primary product. It wasn’t until the 1980s when wine took over as the main focus. Since then, the range has grown considerably and offers some of the best bang for your buck in all of Burgundy.
Profile
For single vineyard chardonnay from Burgundy, this is about the best value going. It comes from a little spot in the southernmost corner of Saint-Veran that is directly opposite Côte-Rôtie in the Rhone Valley. It is a cooler site, leading to slower ripening of the grapes and greater complexity in the resulting wines.
Fragrantly perfumed notes of very ripe Bergeron apricot evolve to reveal textural depth with hints of white nectarine lifted by a mouth-watering touch of acidity. This is a wine that expresses white flowers, lovely flinty notes and aromas of dried fruit with great elegance and minerality.
