Chardonnay 2019 – Black Market Deal #38376
- Rich, full
- Margaret River
I was lucky enough to drink a bottle of this with the winemaker over lunch a few weeks back. We had Moreton Bay bugs absolutely drowning in garlic and butter. What a pairing and what an awesome wine! It’s everything you would want from a bold and boisterous Margs chardonnay. There’s concentration, minerality, funk, citrus acidity and an undertone of struck match. I’m struggling to think of a better high end chardonnay we’ve had in a Black Market deal for quite some time. This is the one to jump all over.
Profile
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.

Ben Goodman
“If you’re into the best that Margaret River has to offer in chardonnay, this is the one right here. It’s so concentrated, expressive and funky. There’s bright citrus acidity, compelling struck match notes and a bit of cashew to complete the package.”
Full price $85.00 from the producer.

Region
Margaret River
Margaret River is as elusive as it is beautiful, such that you really need to visit to truly grasp its haunting beauty. Über-premium Cabernet, Chardonnay and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends grow here. 'Margies' only produces 3% of the country's grapes, but commands over 20% of its premium wine market, and hasn't had an off vintage since 2006. You start to realise how often this region is overlooked when you can list brands like Leeuwin, Cape Mentelle, Vasse Felix, and Voyager, not to mention Cullen, Pierro, Moss Wood, and Deep Woods. It's safe to say that it's time for a revisit.
