Wellanschitz Schiefer & Lehm Blaufränkisch 2018
- Textured, savoury
- Austria
If you are into your European reds, then you’ve probably heard of blaufränkisch. You definitely enjoy saying the word though. It sorta tumbles off the tongue. But speaking of the tongue, what’s it taste like? It’s a little over medium-bodied with a noticeable spiciness, fruits of blackberry and plum, a little pepper and a nice finish of cleansing acidity and fine tannins. In Austria, it’s often that casual wine to open with mates, but this one has a bit of something more due to the higher altitude vineyard and vines aged up to 45 years. You don’t need to be serious about saying ‘blaufränkisch’ or drinking it for that matter, but if you choose to go high-brow, there’s a lot to love in this wine.
