Vulcani d'Italia Etna Rosso 2019
- Textured, savoury
Vulcani d’Italia is a very focused little operation. As the name suggests, they only make wines sourced from the slopes of Italian volcanos, specifically Mount Vulture in Basilicata and Mount Etna on the island of Sicily.
This is their Etna Rosso, a blend of 90% nerello mascalese and 10% nerello cappuccio, all hand-harvested off a vineyard at 600 metres altitude on the northeast slope of Mount Etna. The wine then rests for twelve months in seasoned oak to provide structure yet let the fruit take centre stage. It’s quite fragrant with notes of violet, cherry, myrtle and peach. The palate continues this theme, but with earthiness and a Campari-like kick, all finishing with fine tannins. Medium-bodied and complex, but surprisingly easy to drink, Etna Rosso is a compelling and versatile wine that suits similar foods to pinot noir and lighter grenache.
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.
