Vega Escal Priorat 2017
- Medium bodied
- Priorat
It has been a few years since we’ve sold anything from the Spanish DOQ of Priorat. There are only two regions in all of Spain that carry the DOQ/DOCa (top of the top) qualification and they are Rioja and Priorat, both global benchmarks in magnificent, age-worthy reds.
Profile
Where Rioja is all about tempranillo, Priorat champions the red blend, with local and French varieties grown in their famed Llicorella soils. If you are a bit of a soil nerd or geology buff, do yourself a favour and google Llicorella to learn about the reddish and black carboniferous slate (with mica and quartzite) soils. It’s these soils where the vines need to bury deep within the earth to access water and it’s a journey that adds to the strain of the vines and resulting mineral character in the wine.
I seem to be running out of word count and haven’t said much about the wine, so I’ll hand over to Wine & Spirits Magazine to tell you more. I will say that this is a classically structured Priorat - so ageing potential is good and decanting is a must!

Reviews
Wine & Spirits
“Vega Escal covers 84 acres in the west end of Priorat, in and around the famed vineyard of Gratallops. The 2017 is a blend of equal parts merlot, garnacha and cabernet sauvignon, with small amounts of cariñena and syrah, aged in both French and American barrels. It showcases flavors of blue and black fruit rounded out with notes of fresh vanilla bean and toffee. It smells of wood, but in a pleasant way, with notes of fresh tree bark and whisky. Decant it to let it open up, and serve it with grilled meats.”
