Valserrano El Ribazo Rioja 2016
- Textured, savoury
- Rioja DOC
There is something truely wonderful about the approach of the team at Valserrano. Their century-old cellar sits alongside a state-of-the-art winery and it is a visual representation of their approach, steeped in history, but very modern. Across the board, their wines are slick and polished, but speak of old vines and a true understanding of the land. All of the Valserrano wines have pristine fruit, thoughtful winemaking and a house style that is classic Rioja, with the oak in check.
Profile
āEl Ribazoā, meaningĀ āriverbankā, is from 35-year-old tempranillo vines, planted close to the winery in Villabuena de Ćlava. Ā This wine has aged in a combination of small and large format oak, both French and American, that results in a deep and powerful drink. Ā The palate is tightly-wound and tannins are aplenty, with that high altitude tempranillo acid, all of which suggest that this wine is built to last.

āWhen I visited Valserrano in 2018, I was delighted to find a producer with such deep understanding of their land and vines, and winemaking that is so considerate of letting the fruit do the talking. Though this wine has seen (the infamous) American oak, it is incredibly expressive of their vineyard and all elements work in beautiful harmony. A visit to their cellar door is a must for any wine lover travelling in La Rioja.ā

Tasting
From the producer
The attack is fresh and powerful. A creamy mid palate with a degree of minerality, controlled by good acidity and balanced structure. It wraps around the mouth, leaving flavours of blackberries and liquorice. The aftertaste is long, pleasant and flavoursome.
Winemaking
Viticulture
Terroir wine from the El Ribazo vineyard with 35-year-old Tempranillo vines. EL RIBAZO is an 11-hectare vineyard situated in Villabuena de AĢlava, which belongs to the family. It was planted on gently sloping hillsides, protected to both the north and the south by pronounced banks. The soil composition, the orientation of the vineyard and the age of the vines give it a distinctive character and make it ideal for obtaining TOP QUALITY harvests.
Crafting
The wine has aged in a 5000-litre oak vat and then in American- and French- oak casks. It conserves the style of a typical Villabuena Tempranillo, deep and powerful, while at the same time fresh and elegant.
