Trisole Nero d'Avola 2019
- Medium bodied
Picture this: the world is back to normal and you’ve embarked on a journey to Sicily. You’ve spent most of the day lounging on the beach in the town of Marsala, letting the easterly breeze off the Tyrrhenian Sea cool you down under the warm Mediterranean sun. As the sun sets, you start to feel a bit hungry and thirsty. It’s something hearty you’re after so you go to a little ristorante and order pasta alla Norma and a glass of red wine. The dish arrives and it’s magnificent, perfectly pairing with a glass of what is undoubtedly nero d’Avola.
Perhaps we’re a year or two away from this being a realistic dream. So in the meantime, you can have this experience at home, albeit with a breeze off the Atlantic or Pacific under the warm Australian sun. At least you can get the food and wine exactly right. Just find a good recipe, hit up an Italian grocer for the right ingredients, and pull the cork on a bottle of Trisole nero d’Avola.
Trisole translates to ‘three suns’ in English, a reference to the aformentioned sun-kissed island of Sicily that is surrounded by three seas. This nero is sourced from vineyards on the western side of the island surrounding the city of Marsala. Despite its deep, dark colour and firm structure, the wine is quite elegant with red fruits such as cherry and raspberry, hints of allspice and undergrowth, and a long, grippy finish that make it the perfect accompaniment to your homemade pasta alla Norma.
