Telmo Rodriguez LZ Tempranillo 2018
- Medium bodied
- Rioja DOC
One of the key innovators of modern Rioja, Telmo Rodriguez can ultimately be relied upon for the full gamut of expressions of the region. This is his ‘entry’ level, but it has far more to offer than most at this level. Grapes are from bush vines cared for by Telmo’s longtime viticulturalist partner Pablo Eguzkiza, from vineyards not just in Rioja, but the higher altitude Rioja Alavesa. Handpicked and crafted with gravity and decades of know-how by Telmo himself. Tempranillo is complemented by some graciano and garnacha for a more rounded expression.
Profile
The wine has full red fruits and chocolate cherry cola with herbal notes laced between. Needs a bit of air to get things started, but then fires on all fours. Mid-weight, nice chunky/chalky tannin, bright acidity without being overt. Fruit and tannin win out over the acidity, just enough to ease you back to the next sip, and back into its warming charms. Very easy to like.
Reviews
Mike Bennie
“Savoury perfume with really attractive dried flower, rose petal, game meat and dried cranberry scents – such a nice start. Generous in texture but feels transparent and delicious in its softer spread of flavour. Red cherries, currants, dark chocolate and faint game meat play a part.”
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.
