Why do we love this wine?

Ok, deep breaths. I’m going to have to stay focussed for this one. After writing too many reviews already this week, this one pops up on the ‘to do’ list like a beacon of hope and impending joy. What a pleasure it is to taste and review such iconic Coonawarra cabernet. I am in lust with this wine and it appears I’m not alone.

It has all the credentials. A 5-star Halliday rated winery and 94 points for this release with the trophy cabinet already bulging. This is one for the old skool cabernet hounds. It’s big, ballsy and intense.

There isn’t much that’s been left out of this wine; the roll call of aromas and flavours is distinguished. The almost impenetrable deep purple colour is an early sign that it’s a heavy hitter that’s not afraid to swing the bat.

It is built to go the distance so don’t be afraid to tuck it away in the back of your cellar. If you’re looking for something very special to enjoy in 10, 20 years plus then this has got the legs if you’ve got the patience.

It’s all crayons, ripe red berries, toasty oak and vanilla on the nose. It evolves with some time in the glass or better still, in a decanter so plan ahead and give it plenty of time to unfurl.

Throughout the length and breadth of the palate this wine’s complexity reveals itself in waves of mint, coffee, an array of ripe berries, cassis, cigar box characters and chocolate with a dollop of double cream, just for good measure.

It is volumous and beautifully rounded, redefining the concept of silky. This is a vinous massage for the palate; it grabs hold, works its magic then leaves you basking in the glorious afterglow. Sigh.

The texture is unctuous and jammy but make no mistake, it’s precisely balanced.  A winemaker this renowned and experienced doesn’t let fruit like this sit in 70% new oak for two years only to let it blow out. It’s an impressive result.

This is a special occasion wine. Whether that occasion is this Friday night or your next milestone that’s up to you.

What you can be assured of is this cabernet sauvignon is up for it and will rise to the grandest occasion.
