Pinot Noir 2018 – Black Market Deal #34630
- Textured, savoury
Martinborough is the under-the-radar home of pinot noir on the North Island of New Zealand. It’s a tiny little place and the wines are stunning, certainly rivalling those of the much more heralded Central Otago. This one has garnered praise from an array of critics and speaks of the terroir in every respect. It’s medium-bodied, concentrated, herbal, floral and spicy with a little whack of oak and fine-grained tannins. This has elegance, power and complexity all packed into one bottle.
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.

Anyone who's ever tried Martinborough pinot noir will shout its praises from the rooftop... at least, anyone who's not a Marlborough diehard. There seems to be a nice rivalry in the pinot stakes between the two regions, with Martinborough producing more structural (some would say "Burgundian") styles, as opposed to Marlborough's fruity flavour fests. If you see one, nab it. Also keep an eye out for the aromatic whites.
The rules are there ain’t no rules, but here are some foods we think will work pretty well with this wine...
