Nga Waka Three Paddles Pinot Noir 2017
- Textured, savoury
This wonderful pinot noir is brand new to the ‘fo and we are stoked to share it with you. Nga Waka was established in 1988 and are a small family-owned winegrower producer making top-quality wines. Based in Martinborough, at the bottom of the North Island, this wine is a great example of the region - a dense and savoury pinot, backed by dark fruits, spice and tannin. Michale Cooper’s tasting note below is a good indicator of the style of wine, which is not a delicate pinot, but a much more deep and powerful wine.
“The 2017 vintage (4 stars) was French oak-aged for a year (20 per cent new). Fragrant, with a spicy bouquet, it is ruby-hued, with generous, ripe, plummy, spicy flavours, savoury notes adding complexity, and finely balanced tannins. Best drinking 2021”
Full price $30.00 from the producer.

Anyone who's ever tried Martinborough pinot noir will shout its praises from the rooftop... at least, anyone who's not a Marlborough diehard. There seems to be a nice rivalry in the pinot stakes between the two regions, with Martinborough producing more structural (some would say "Burgundian") styles, as opposed to Marlborough's fruity flavour fests. If you see one, nab it. Also keep an eye out for the aromatic whites.
