From the first-ever montepulciano vineyard planted in Australia - this one proves that the original is always the best. Decanter don't throw out 97pt ratings willy nilly, this is the real deal, the good stuff. We're pretty comfortable saying that this is the best montepulciano in the country, and the price is down right NUTS!

Don't worry, try one of these

Why do we love this wine?

This is one of those reds that grabs your attention from the first swirl of the glass. Deep, dark and purple-hued in the glass, it’s a heady mix of morello cherry, liquorice, and earthy spice on the nose, with hints of dried herbs and leather adding depth. The palate is lively and juicy - just what you'd expect - dark cherry and red liquorice up front, then a savoury undercurrent of blueberry, spice and a little leather rolling through. Bright acidity keeps it fresh, while fine-grained yet sturdy tannins give it backbone and a long, structured finish. It’s energetic, it’s savoury, and it’s got that perfect balance between fruit generosity and serious structure. Pair it with slow-cooked lamb, roasted veg, or anything that deserves a bold, characterful red. We challenge you to dislike this wine... it's impossible.

Frequently Asked Questions

This Australian Barossa Valley Montepulciano showcases how terroir transforms a grape variety. While Italian Montepulciano d'Abruzzo tends toward earthier, more rustic profiles, the Barossa's warm climate and ancient soils produce a more fruit-forward expression with concentrated dark cherry flavors and refined tannin structure. The result is a wine that maintains Montepulciano's characteristic savory backbone while offering the generous fruit intensity that Barossa is famous for.

Decanter Magazine's exceptional 97-point rating reflects this wine's remarkable balance between power and elegance. The score recognizes the seamless integration of concentrated fruit, structured tannins, and bright acidity - a combination that's particularly challenging to achieve in warm climate regions. This rating places it among Australia's elite reds, suggesting exceptional winemaking skill and outstanding vineyard fruit quality that delivers both immediate appeal and long-term aging potential.

The wine's savory complexity and medium body make it incredibly food-friendly, particularly with dishes that echo its earthy, spiced character. Beyond the suggested slow-cooked lamb, try it with grilled portobello mushrooms, herb-crusted beef, or aged hard cheeses like Pecorino Romano. The bright acidity cuts through rich, fatty foods while the leather and spice notes complement dishes with rosemary, thyme, or black pepper.

Serve this Montepulciano at 16-18°C to showcase its complex aromatics and balanced structure. While delicious now, the 2021 vintage has the tannin structure and acidity to develop beautifully over 5-8 years in proper cellar conditions. Decanting for 30-60 minutes before serving will help integrate the flavors and soften the fine-grained tannins, revealing the wine's full aromatic potential.

The 'Black Market Deal' designation typically indicates this is a premium wine offered at a significantly reduced price, often because the producer prefers to remain anonymous or is clearing excess inventory. Given the 97-point rating and 'Cult Producer' status, you're likely getting access to a highly regarded winemaker's exceptional Montepulciano at a fraction of its usual retail price - making this an outstanding value proposition for serious wine enthusiasts.
