Merlot Blend 2012 – Black Market Deal #36313
- Medium bodied
- Hawke's Bay
This is without a doubt one of the most exciting producers we have ever landed for the Black Market. That’s no exaggeration at all. They are an icon of the New Zealand wine scene and this is their take on the classic Right Bank Bordeaux blend. The colour is a deep garnet and the nose is lifted with hints of violets, boisenberry and cinnamon. On the palate there is richness but also structure. Heaps of secondary characteristics have come to the forefront, most notably nutmeg and sandalwood, yet the fruit remains readily apparent. After eight years, the tannins have become fine and dusty, providing a lingering and enjoyable finish. What a score for our Mofo’s!
What is a Black Market deal?
Black Market deals are only made possible if we don’t reveal the maker’s brand on site. The wines are the genuine article – absolutely no cleanskins or fake brands, just dangerously good value. You won’t find out what it is until it hits your doorstep, but you won’t regret it. Just keep it on the down low.
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.

Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's oldest wine region, with climate similar to Bordeaux and Sancerre in France. It's no surprise then that their best wines happen to be Cabernet blends and Sauvignon Blanc, as well as Syrah. Unfortunately, most of this gets slurped up within NZ, and we have to bang down doors to get some over to Australia. Lucky for you mofos, we're pretty good at this.
