Maverick Trial Hill Grenache 2019
- Rich, full-bodied
- Eden Valley
Maverick Wines tends 75 acres of vineyards spread through the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley. Many are well over 100 years’ old with some dating back as far as the 1840s. Their winery is Certified Biodynamic and all of their vineyards are either Certified Biodynamic or biodynamic in practice. Dry farming plays a huge part in their grape growing as well, promoting incredible concentration of flavour. Everything is hand harvested and only their own fruit is used. It’s no surprise that they’ve attained a Five Star Red rating from James Halliday.
Profile
Trial Hill, the vineyard source for this grenache, was planted in the 1860s in the Pewsey Vale sub-region of Eden Valley. Andrew Caillard, one of the country’s leading wine critics, has called it ‘the most beautiful vineyard in Australia’, and Steve Spurrier, the late great English wine critic, called the wines off the vineyard ‘brilliantly evocative with the clarity and harmony expected from a Grand Cru vineyard’. That is high praise indeed! Originally one of the source vineyards for Grange, it is now Certified Biodynamic and producing some incredible fruit. Have a look below at what Sam Kim had to say about this grenache.
Reviews
Wine Orbit
“Offering fabulous fruit purity and fragrance, the wine shows raspberry, dark cherry, violet, thyme and roasted nut aromas on the nose. The palate displays juicy fruit intensity combined with sensual mouthfeel, delightfully complemented by refine tannins, finishing seamlessly long and satisfying. At its best: 2022 to 2035.”

Eden Valley
Next door to the Barossa Valley lies Eden Valley, a small yet highly significant Aussie region celebrated for their signature cool climate wines and impressive history. According to our sources, the first Eden Valley vineyard was planted in the early 1840s, and today there are just over 12 local wineries, both boutique and family-owned that continue to produce, exceptional vintages, including the famous Yalumba and Henschke. Renowned for their signature riesling and shiraz, the glorious region is a heavenly picking field for A-grade fruit. It comes as no surprise that many of Australia's winemakers source their grapes from the Eden Valley.
