Marchand & Burch Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Lavieres Premier Cru Pinot Noir 2018
- Elegant, lighter
Marchand & Burch is the longtime collaboration between ex-Quebec Burgundian vigneron Pascal Marchand and Jeff Burch, founder of iconic Margaret River winery Howard Park. Together they make wines in both Burgundy and WA under the Marchand & Burch label.
Their Savigny-Les-Beaune Les Lavieres Premier Cru comes from a vineyard towards the bottom of the hill in Savigny that is named after the volcanic soil (Les Lavieres translates to ‘the lava’). Once the 70 year old pinot noir vines are harvested, fermentation takes place with 30% whole bunches to had some structure and character to the wine. It is then racked to 20% new oak for 16 months before being bottled unfined and unfiltered (vegans rejoice!).
On the nose you’ll find cassis, dark cherry, vanilla, licorice, cinnamon, orange rind and some earthen tones. Complex, we know. The palate continues these primary and secondary expressions with the inclusion of fine, dusty tannins leading to a spicy, savoury and lengthy finish. The wine is drinking beautifully now but has another decade in it should you be so patient. We probably won’t be.
“These days the wine itself is enough of a reason to celebrate. This Premier Cru Burgundy boasts dark fruit balanced by vanilla, orange and earthen tones. One to ponder for sure.”
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.
