Why do we love this wine?

Locations blend grapes from multiple regions in an attempt to make a unique expression of a larger area. It’s awesome. Take this red blend, for example. The E stands for España, and winemaker Dave Phinney has sourced grapes from Rioja, Toro, Ribera del Duero and Jumilla to create a huge Spanish red that’s received 96 points from Critics Challenge & Wine Review Online, as well as 93 points from the man himself, Robert Parker.

Parker has placed Phinney’s wines on his annual Top 100 list seven times in the last 11 years and called him the ‘Value Winemaker of the Year’, saying “if there are better wines for under $USD20 a bottle in the world today, please share that information with The Wine Advocate. These are all remarkable efforts.”

This is a blend of grenache, tempranillo, monastrell and carignan taken from some of Spain’s oldest vines. The result is a dark vino with white pepper, tobacco and blackcurrants on the nose. Flavours of plums and dark raspberries reign supreme, with subtle notes of vanilla too. There’s no siesta here, just fiesta.
