Legón Premium 2015
- Rich, full-bodied
- Ribera del Duero
Vilano, the winery behind Legón Premium, was set up as a cooperative back in 1957 in Ribera del Duero. Many of their vines, including those utilised for this 100% tempranillo wine, are over a century old and sit above 900 metres. The combination of impressive intensity due to vine age and a spell of two years in French oak have resulted in a complete wine, one the begins with black cherry, chocolate, spice and licorice, before giving way to sandalwood, herbs and lavender. It’s drinking well right now, retaining concentration and richness, but give it even more time and the secondary features will become readily apparent as the wine softens. Check out the exceptional review below that accompanied a 96 point score and gold medal from Decanter.

Decanter Magazine
“Very good expression of Tempranillo from Ribera, The wine has a pronounced intensity on the nose with red and black fruits, spices, oak and chocolate. The palate is full-bodied with a black cherry expression. It finishes impressively with just a touch of supportive liquorice. Bravo!”

I think of this as the deeper, darker brother to Rioja - same grapes, so close, and yet so different. It's like Barolo vs Barbaresco in a lot of ways... make up your own mind!
