Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon 2016
- Rich, full-bodied
- Margaret River
Another vintage, another classic. How can you expect anything less from Leeuwin Estate with their Art Series cabernet? They’ve been making this iconic and age-worthy wine over in Margaret River for decades. I think they’ve got it all figured out by now. And even in the context of year upon year of special cab savs, the 2016 stands out. James Halliday gave it 97 points, his highest review ever for this wine. While his review laments on the history and winemaking, here’s Nick Stock’s writeup which best describes this specific vintage:
Profile
‘Impressively curated cabernet with cedar and tobacco aromas framing bright red berries, as well as bergamot, black tea, red plums and violets. The palate has a smooth, succulent and elegantly juicy shape and such fine, taut and layered tannins that carry so long and pure. Superb cab with power and elegance. Best from 2024.’
Reviews
James Halliday
“After berry sorting, cold soak and maceration, pumping over three times daily, the wine pumped to French barriques for mlf and 9 months maturation. The Art Series range has a clear family approach to each wine, a focus and sophistication that brings certainty to its long-term maturity.”

Margaret River
Margaret River is as elusive as it is beautiful, such that you really need to visit to truly grasp its haunting beauty. Über-premium Cabernet, Chardonnay and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends grow here. 'Margies' only produces 3% of the country's grapes, but commands over 20% of its premium wine market, and hasn't had an off vintage since 2006. You start to realise how often this region is overlooked when you can list brands like Leeuwin, Cape Mentelle, Vasse Felix, and Voyager, not to mention Cullen, Pierro, Moss Wood, and Deep Woods. It's safe to say that it's time for a revisit.
