L'Orgie Côtes du Rhône GSM 2018
- Textured, savoury
- Côtes du Rhône
Bring mofos together with L’Orgie, our first global collaboration. In collaboration with Château Sixtine, we bring you a French orgy where only three are allowed. Who are the mysterious three invited to L’Orgie? Well, they go by the names: grenache, syrah, mourvèdre. Three’s never a crowd, it’s a party. Don’t feel a Rhône, join the French fun with L’Orgie.
Profile
The Wine
The two words that come to mind for L’Orgie are plush and lively. Sweet raspberries are the driving force in this wine, sitting with plums - both rich blood plums and the puckering pink ones. It is a medium-bodied, spicy wine with soft and mellow tannins. If you are a seasoned Rhône drinker, take note: this is on the more powerful end of the spectrum.
Tasting Talk for L’Orgie
Made by Château Sixtine
Château Sixtine, a producer based in the Rhone Valley have been a ‘fo favourite for quite some time. We’ve swooned over many of their wines, their classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape has even had Head of Buying at the ‘fo, John claim that it’s “one of the the best wines I’ve ever bought!”
Established in 1673, Château Sixtine is a family-run producer, most recently by four generations of the Diffonty family. Located between Orange and Avignon, in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the Château Sixtine covers fifteen hectares with a focus on grenache, syrah and mourvèdre. The new generation of the family have brought modernity and elegance to Château and they are now one of the biggest names of the Appellation Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
The Process
Back in 2013, we teamed up with Hither & Yon in McLaren Vale for a few vintages of The Orgy GSM. We had three wonderful years and now only the memories of what were very delicious wines.
Fast forward to early 2019 and Vinomofo Head of Buying John had a lightbulb moment - to take the Collaboration Series global. What an idea! After a big brainstorm and a lot of passionate discussion on the best region and wine, we decided Côtes du Rhône and from there, it was obvious that the legendary Château Sixtine was the producer to work with on the project. With an already great relationship with the producer, having imported 4 straight vintages of their Châteauneuf-du-Pape, we approached them about working with us on a Southern Rhône grenache shiraz mourvèdre blend.
The response was not only positive, they LOVED the idea and from there plans were made.
The Inspiration
The sassy label for this one is just a slight variation on the original The Orgy. We made sure (with trusty Google Translate) that we weren’t about to make a cultural faux pas and the rest is history, or l’histoire.
It’s cool, we get it, you want to know absolutely everything about this wine. Well here you go, go nuts.

Winemaking
Viticulture
The beginning of the year 2018 was characterised by high precipitation levels. These conditions required vigilance and anticipation in the vineyard. Thanks to the high temperatures of August, the ripening went perfectly and the grapes were in excellent health conditions when harvested in September, which was a hot and dry month.
