Herència Altés Garnatxa Negra 2017
- Medium bodied
- Terra Alta
Before we launch into why this wine is great, let’s get up to speed with a couple of terms.
Profile
- Terra Alta - DO (region) in southern Catalunya (think Barcelona), and means ‘High Lands’ because of the rolling hills and altitude.
- Garnatxa - Catalan spelling of the grenache (garnacha negra) grape.
So, why is this wine great? It’s the combination of high altitude vineyards, organic management and that beautiful and consistent Mediterranean climate that makes growing season a dream. Old and young vines make for complexity, picked at the right time to balance fruit and acidity. It’s on the darker, moodier side of the grenache spectrum, with well integrated tannin and a structure that will benefit from an hour in a decanter. I’ve heard that 90% of wines in Europe are drunk with food. With this wine’s power and freshness, you can see why.
