Robert Parker once called the man behind this wine "one of the greatest winemakers on planet earth." We can't tell you his name. But we can tell you he earned it. This is Grand Cru McLaren Vale grenache - and that's not a marketing term, that's a genuine classification given to this single vineyard site in Blewitt Springs. 97 Wine Advocate. 96 Suckling. 96 Gary Walsh. 95 Halliday. Made only in the best years... got your attention yet?

Why do we love this wine?

Bush vines planted in the 1940s, growing in soil so dense with rock that after eight decades of trying, the vines have barely managed 30 centimetres of height. Low yields, extreme concentration, and approximately 500 cases produced for the entire world. What's in the bottle is extraordinary - violet, musk, and rose petal on the nose, with layers of blueberry, raspberry and cherry skin woven through crushed rock minerality and a weightless, incense-like lift. The tannins are supple and are beautifully integrated, giving the wine an effortless power that's impossible to fake and impossible to rush.

Frequently Asked Questions

These Grenache vines were planted in the 1940s and have struggled against incredibly rocky soil for over 80 years, reaching only 30 centimetres in height. This extreme stress forces the vines to develop incredibly deep root systems and concentrate all their energy into producing small quantities of intensely flavoured fruit. The combination of old vine wisdom and harsh growing conditions creates grapes with exceptional complexity and mineral depth that simply cannot be replicated in younger, more comfortable vineyard sites.

With only approximately 500 cases produced for the entire world, this represents the ultimate expression of scarcity in fine wine. The combination of ancient bush vines, extreme terroir, and naturally low yields means the vineyard can only produce tiny quantities each vintage. McLaren Vale's rocky soils and the vine's age further restrict production, making each bottle a genuine collector's piece that represents decades of viticultural patience and natural selection.

This Grenache has achieved remarkable critical acclaim with scores ranging from 95-97 points across major wine publications. The Wine Advocate's 97-point rating places it in the exceptional category, while James Suckling (96pts), Gary Walsh (96pts), and Halliday Wine Companion (95pts) all recognise its outstanding quality. Such consistent high scoring across different critics indicates a wine of genuine world-class calibre that transcends personal taste preferences.

The aromatic profile opens with elegant violet, musk, and rose petal notes that showcase Grenache's perfumed character. On the palate, layers of blueberry, raspberry, and cherry skin provide fruit complexity, while the rocky terroir contributes crushed rock minerality and an ethereal, incense-like quality. The supple, integrated tannins create what's described as 'effortless power' - a hallmark of truly great old vine Grenache that balances intensity with remarkable elegance.

At over a decade old, this 2013 Grenache is entering its prime drinking window, with the tannins beautifully integrated and the complex aromatics fully developed. However, wines of this calibre from ancient vines often have extraordinary longevity, potentially improving for another 10-15 years in proper cellar conditions. The 'weightless' character and mineral backbone suggest it will continue evolving gracefully, though the current harmony between fruit, earth, and floral elements makes it absolutely stunning to enjoy now.
