Why do we love this wine?

$50 Barolo. I could just leave it there.

In fact, I will leave that there, but I’ll give you a bit more colour too. Before I do, just know that $50 Barolo in Australia is actually ridiculous. You’d normally pay this money for Barolo’s little brother, Langhe, and double it for the privilege of saying the big B-word.

It’s lovely stuff. Peacock tails, tar, roses, all the things. Complex. Please decant. I asked Kate for a bit more about why she loved it enough to buy it.

She found Giovanni Rosso at Prowein, and started with the premium stuff. “We bought some of that, and off the back of that success, we were given access to the rest of the range,” says Kate.

Decanter

“We’re really proud to bring this in. We’ve already had people commenting on these wines after having access to the super-premiums, the Serra and Ceretto. Things like: ‘Vinomofo is giving us the chance to try these world class wines that we’d otherwise never be able to afford’. It’s a really good vintage too. 2012 and 2013 were both good.”

Karel chimes in. “2012 was more Burgundian, 2013 is more powerful, more fruit.” Remember to put that in an Italian context. ‘Fruit-driven’ for Italy is lean for Australia.

We’ve spared no expense getting it here either. It’s been shipped in a refrigerated container from Europe, and is now tucked safely in our Port Melbourne warehouse. For now.

Kate’s final words: “Pump it up, it’s exciting”.

I agree.
