Fattoria Svetoni Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG 2016
- Rich, full-bodied
Fattoria Svetoni has quite the lofty history. Pietro Leopoldo, Grand Duke of Tuscany, spent years building the property. He originally named it ‘Leopoldina’ cuz I guess that’s what you did back then. Wine production began all the way back in 1865 and once the winery changed hands, it was renamed Fattoria Svetoni. They grow primarily prugnolo gentile, a variety of sangiovese, and produce several wines from the grape.
This is Svetoni’s Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a beautiful wine to pair with gamey meats and aged cheeses. It’s deep in colour with hints of cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry on the nose. A bit of time in barrique has provided some structure to the wine and fine tannins to carry the finish.
Full price $60.00 from the producer.

Italian wine regions are by far some of the most difficult to learn about. With over 350 official wine varieties, it can be very easy to get lost. Never fear though, you'll see some of your old friends such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio and Sangiovese as well as some new friends such as Chianti, Arneis, Fiano, Nebbiolo and Vermentino. Italian wines are a match made in heaven for food, but can easily be enjoyed on their own. Good food and good wine - THAT is the Italian way.
