Not too far outside of the CBD of Mendoza is an area called Luján de Cuyo, where an array of old vineyards produce incredible wines. These old vines and extreme growing conditions provide grapes of unparalleled concentration. In the right hands, like those of Argentine Winemaker of the Year Hervé Fabre, the resulting wines are spellbinding. This one is 100% cabernet franc, completely hand-harvested. 60% of the juice sees 12 months in French oak. Rich and plush red fruits all over, with a plum-meets-peach kinda happy roundness to the nose - with a side of bready, chocolatey, coconutty lamington. The palate is rich, but uber-bright thanks to high altitude freshness. Earthy, almost-smoky depths balance out its piquancy. A bit more structure and more red-fruited florals.
