Barolo is always in the discussion of the top premium wine regions in the world. If you are bothering to read this, then you probably already know that it is a small area in Piemonte in Northern Italy that produces only red wines made from nebbiolo. Barolo itself is divided into 11 communes (sub-regions). Serralunga d’Alba, one of the most famous of the communes, is home to Ettore Germano. Now run by Sergio Germano, the winery is one of the top producers in Serralunga d’Alba and has been making wine since 1856.
While 2014 doesn’t get the press that 2015 or 2016 gets for Barolo, the best producers still made great wines. The not-so-well-kept secret is that a lot of Cru Barolo wasn’t classified, so that fruit went into the Barolo-level wines for many wineries. In the case of this one, it’s the harvest off Ettore Germano’s vineyard in Prapó, which usually goes into one of their absolute top wines. You’ll find all the typical Barolo traits of dried fruits, dark cherry, tea leaves, spice and leather, but there’s also notes of vanilla and a fine tannin line that lets you know this wine is ready to drink. This might just be the under-the-radar Barolo offer of the year.
