De Bortoli The Estate Vineyard Gamay 2020
- Textured, savoury
- Yarra Valley
Our producer needs no introduction, but we’ll give you one anyway. The one and only De Bortoli are royalty in the Yarra Valley, having been there since 1928. Their story is one of family, of passion, and above all of harnessing life’s great pleasures: good wine, food, and friends.
Profile
It’s not really a surprise that most reviews of this wine will include the word ‘impressive’ somewhere, because it is simply that. Gamay can be a bit of a one-trick pony, but certainly not when it’s showing off the Valley’s terroir. Whole bunch and whole berry fermentation has imparted intense aromatic quality of violets and cherries. It’s superbly vibrant from the minute the wine hits your mouth: mulberries, raspberries, and strawberries evoking moments of bliss at fresh fruit markets. Savoury characters come to join the party with charcuterie, truffle and earthiness on the finish- there’s really nothing this wine doesn’t deliver. It’s the one to have with lunch, dinner, and in good company.
Reviews
The Wine Front
“This combines juicy, cherried, savoury-edged flavour with an understated meatiness. It just ticks all the boxes, sophistication included, pure pleasure too, joy, savoury joy. I recommended it heartily. It just, simply, drinks a treat, with food or without, in a light but not too-light way.”
