Why do we love this wine?
While most consider Pinot Noir to be New Zealand’s top red varietal, I’d argue that Kiwi Syrah might actually be more impressive. It only covers 1% of the vineyard space over there, but it’s starting to get noticed more and more. Craggy Range, amongst the upper echelon of wine producers in NZ, makes some incredible Syrah in Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay. Stylistically, think Northern Rhone with peppery notes and a medium body rather than a big high-alcohol fruit bomb from the warmer areas of South Australia. It ages beautifully and pairs well with a wide range of foods. – Ben, Mofo Wine Buyer.

Combine one of New Zealand’s most innovative wine labels with Hawkes Bay, and the result is something special. The very mention of Gimblett Gravels is a good indication of what to expect. The stony soil here provides a sturdy mineral base to build on. Along with its struck rock notes, there’s plenty of pepper and spice with underlying plum and fennel. The palate provides answers - and asks questions.  There’s a lot to ponder. Old world? New world? Rich and ripe or dark and brooding? Full-bodied or leaning towards medium? A tantalising style with fine features and ‘gravelly’ tannins, this is savoury Syrah at its finest.
