It may be an over-used phrase, but in this instance it is entirely deserving: Clarendon Hill are McLaren Vale royalty. Their wines are not only among the best of the region, but the best of the continent. Any discussion about Australia's leading producers that doesn't include Clarendon Hill is, by default, incomplete.

Why do we love this wine?

Beautifully blue fruited despite the not-insignificant time in cellar. It has such richness and deep, brooding, plummy weight. A distinctly impressive wine that is in perfect shape – I suspect we may have intersected it at the height of its abilities, though it will surely stay there for some time. Beyond the dense fruit profile there's smoke, spice, bristly acid, wet earth, umami, terracotta minerality, grassy savoury notes, cedar and pine – entirely too much going on to capture in one thought. This is a candidate for Wine of the Year for me. Buy it now, but be sure to save a bottle for when the 'rellies come by for Christmas lunch (or for when they leave, depending on how much you like your 'rellies).

Robert Parker

Intensely vibrant and floral, the 2016 Kangarilla Grenache combines scents of roses and pomegranates with red raspberries, cherries and vaguely herbal, garrigue-like notes. It's medium to full-bodied, ripe and supple, with silky tannins on a long, lingering finish.
