Why do we love this wine?

Château du Moulin-à-Vent, Moulin-à-Vent. It has nothing to do with vol au vent, other than ‘vent’, or wind (vol au vent translates literally to ‘flight in the wind’). French is strange sometimes. I mean, imagine if we called a wine ‘Castle of the Windmill, Windmill’. The struggle is real.

Luckily, the flavour is worth the struggle. Come to grips with the fact that there’s a French wine region named after the ancient windmill at its centrepiece, and then there’s a winery that also named itself after said windmill, and you’ll find one of the best châteaux of Beaujolais, making serious expression of gamay that are as far from the strawberries-and-bubblegum Beaujolais Nouveau style as you can get. This one, their staple, has a couple of years age now and is blossoming.

Blossoms in the glass too. Rose, cherry and cacao (dark chocolate if you’re not an oh-so-trendy muesli lover like me), blueberries and a touch of spice. It’s darker and more powerful than you may imagine gamay to be, but still silky, delicate and light in your mouth.

If you haven’t tried serious Beaujolais before, now’s the time to throw three sheets to the wind. Or windmill.
