Cascina Ca'Rossa Mompissano Roero DOCG Riserva 2016
- Textured, savoury
- Roero
Cascina Ca’Rossa (translates to Red House) is the ‘Fo’s first foray into the high-end wines of Roero. Roero might not generate the international press of Barolo or Barbaresco, but the nebbiolo out of this small region is certainly their equal. Ca’Rossa is run by several generations of the Ferrio family and has been operating with organic certification since 2012.
Profile
Mompissano is a small vineyard in the Roero Riserva DOCG with a southwest exposure and calcerous and clay soils. The nebbiolo is hand harvested, fermented and aged in large format Slavonian oak. This is an incredibly complex and ageworthy wine with ripe notes of cherry, peppercorn and cinnamon on the nose. The palate is quite structured with vibrant acidity and a long, persistent finish. Stylistically, this could be compared to Barolo, but with a bit more dark fruit on the palate. It’s just getting into its drinking window, but certainly has another decade ahead of it at a minimum. This is a rare wine to find in Australia, but for lovers of Barolo and Barbaresco, a must-have and an absolute revelation.
