Cabrito Oscuro Grenache 2019
- Medium bodied
Next door to La Rioja, in the cool north of Spain lies the region of Navarra. Where tempranillo shines in Rioja, garnacha (or grenache) is the star of Navarra. Young vines go into rosé and once the vines have matured, they make deep, layered, velvety reds. The Cabrito Oscuro comes for a collection of old sites, high on mountains, where a long season allows the grapes to gain flavour and complexity, while retaining freshness. Ripe plums and blackberries beam from the glass, followed by aniseed spice and a touch of toasty oak. This is full-bodied, full-flavour and very easy to like.
There’s a bit of an Aussie connection to this wine to - it’s part of the global family of brands that include McLaren Vale’s Thistledown - a local grenache leader.
“Wonderfully fruited and immediately appealing, the wine shows blackcurrant, sweet cherry, smoked game and roasted nut aromas on the nose. The palate delivers excellent weight and supple mouthfeel, finishing gorgeously long and silky. At its best: now to 2029.”
