Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2019
- Textured, savoury
Ata Rangi comfortably sits amongst the top producers in Martinborough, arguably New Zealand’s top region for pinot noir (objections from Central Otago will be duly noted). Crimson is Ata Rangi’s pinot sourced from younger vines on the Martinborough Terrace. We’re not talking babies here, with some of the vines sitting at 20 years old. The fruit profile is more expressive with younger vines of course, providing in this case notes of cranberry and raspberry before giving way to a savoury and spicy finish. Wild yeast is employed in the fermention, keeping to the Ata Rangi ideal of a hands-off approach. Good luck keeping your hands off this once it lands, mofo.
“Gorgeously styled and fragrant with dark cherry, olive, roasted nut and floral aromas with a hint of vanilla. The palate offers excellent fruit purity and velvety texture, combined with juicy fruit intensity backed by silky tannins, making it fabulously drinkable.”
Full price $45.00 from the producer.

Anyone who's ever tried Martinborough pinot noir will shout its praises from the rooftop... at least, anyone who's not a Marlborough diehard. There seems to be a nice rivalry in the pinot stakes between the two regions, with Martinborough producing more structural (some would say "Burgundian") styles, as opposed to Marlborough's fruity flavour fests. If you see one, nab it. Also keep an eye out for the aromatic whites.
