Why do we love this case?

These are some of the most exciting white wines known to humanity, from across the globe. If that doesn’t get you pumped up, mofo, we don’t know what will. From France, Spain, Portugal and Australia, we’ve got a world of wonder for you to enjoy, right here.

Every case contains TWO of each of the following:

White Blend 2018

Barossa Valley, SA

Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

If you like a Rhône valley white, or perhaps southern Italian, this’ll be right up your alley. It’s a field blend, so all of the grapes are from the one vineyard. It’s a mosaic rather than a hodgepodge: I found all the components to show cracking balance, and really well-judged. It’s mouthfilling and plushly fruited, with a real yummy orange jelly vibe, peaches and cream, orange blossom and grapefruit. The riesling is an excellent addition, that gives it freshness but doesn’t overpower the riper, warmer fruits with too much citrus. Loads of pithy texture here, too.

Halliday Wine Companion
Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery

When you want to spice things up and try something a little more exotic, viognier provides the answer. With the floral aromatics of riesling combined with the texture of chardonnay, viognier is often called the red drinker’s white because of its extra body and complexity. It’s a tricky beast in the vineyard - but in the glass - wow! This one from Known Pleasures has floral elements and five-spice combining with apricot kernels and gentle ginger. The palate kicks on with an enticing slippery texture, while still finishing with fine citrus acidity. It’s easy to see how this style can handle a chilli kick. Take your pick with Indian tandoori chicken, Sichuan dishes, Vietnamese pho or spicy char kway teow.

We love Rhône Valley whites. Maybe it’s their relative rarity that makes them taste that little bit more special. Maybe it’s the richer style and heady orange-blossom aromatics that makes them seem like a bit of a treat. Either way, this is wonderful. A sub-label of one of the Châteauneuf titans, this is tip-top quality, and damn tasty.

Fiano is a versatile grape and suits a lot of growing conditions, from the Mediterranean climate of McLaren Vale to the alpine freshness of the King Valley. This KV example by Twin Valleys is a touch lighter and brighter than what you’d get from the Vale - sitting closer to grigio than say, viognier. There is still heaps of fruit and florals in this wine and acid to accompany all sorts of foods - though no doubt best with something southern Italian.

Portuguese Import

This white blend is from a winery and region new to the ‘fo - Adega Mãe, which is based north of the Portuguese capital of Lisbon. The wine is clean and fresh on the nose with citrus and fresh sweet herbs. Lively and acidic on the palate, but with generous fruit - apples and pears and a lime cordial finish. We think any aromatic white drinker would love this.

Mofo Fave

From one of our favourites, Celler Masroig in Montsant, this is a super-lively white made from 60/40% macabeo and grenache blanc. Both local varieties thrive in the dry heat and high altitude of the region. We reckon this wine is a bit of a crossover hit for drinkers of aromatic whites that like a palate with texture, one that is not too fruity, but rather zesty and herbaceous. You’ll be surprised at just how quickly a dozen bottles of this will disappear!
