It is without a doubt that chardonnay is the number one white grape globally - from Chablis to Napa, Hawke’s Bay to Margs, it is the magical variety behind some seriously profound wines. Oh, and we can’t forget its role in Champagne. This pack covers six regions, in six different countries, on four continents - really, it doesn’t get much better than this. This is an elemental wine. South Africa is defined by careful balance. Hot sun and cool coastal breezes, the changing of the seasons, the passing of time. You can sense all this at work here. Heady tangerine and citrus blossom meet rich vanilla pod and almond flakes. It’s as fragrant as spring, ripe as summer, ephemeral as autumn and crisp as winter. The best thing, though, is its versatility. It’s absolutely perfect to take to dinner, particularly when you don’t know what’s on the menu. The fresh acid will pair beautifully with bright dishes, but there’s enough richness to sit well with heavier fare. Plus, a wine from a South African chardonnay legend like Paul Cluver definitely makes a good talking point.

We're going to leave this one to Mr Halliday from his 96 point review: "Bright, light straw-green; has all the elegance and length that puts Yarra Valley chardonnay on a par with Margaret River as the best Australian regions for chardonnay. White peach and nashi pear fruit flavours are dominant, the oak subtle, the acidity fresh."

An almost unique style of chardy - this is absolutely one to try. There’s no shortage of classic flavours. You’ll get all the fresh citrus, green and yellow apples and white peach you could wish for. But this also sees flor ageing in barrel, not unlike sherry. And that’s where the magic happens. The fruit is enhanced with complex yeasty notes, vanillin-sweet oak and nutty-savoury undertones. It’s richly flavoured, but perfectly balanced at the same time. Wonderfully made wine!

There’s never any shortage of revolutions in the wine world. Grapes, regions, winemakers and styles take the world by storm, one after the other. First it was Cali cabernet, then NZ sav blanc. You know the story. Chile’s had a quieter revolution, though. They’ve been quietly upping their game, year after year, and making some stunning wines. Time for them to get the recognition they deserve. This chardy is fleshy and full, but showcases tasteful restraint in the winemaking. Zippy acidity steers the palate to considerable freshness and highlights the beautiful fruit purity on display. The finish is soft and softly creamy, leaving you immediately keen for another sip.

This wine is sure to bring the much needed joy to your glass - it’s a rich and unctuous chardonnay, grown on a hillside vineyard over in the North Island’s glorious Hawkes Bay. The wine spent nearly a year in new oak (including some new) - giving it texture - as well as completing malolactic fermentation to give you that heavenly, creamy nougat mouthfeel. Hopesgrove really know what they’re doing.
