World Cabernet Lineup

Is there a major wine country in the world that doesn’t make good cab sav? We don’t really know of one. It all started in Bordeaux, but we’ve seen fit to get a bit more worldly with this pack of some of the finest examples from Chile, Argentina, South Africa and yes, France. So enjoy these different expression of the noblest of the noble grapes.
Every pack contains TWO bottles each of the following:

Clare cabernet manages a magic balancing act. It nails the robust, classic style we all love, while still showing great freshness and elegance. This one from Kirrihill starts with an opening salvo of dense, dark fruit. But look just beneath the surface to find surprisingly delicate nuance and subtle complexity in the form of black cherry, blackberry, roasted coffee and hazelnut. This’ll be a formidable option to cellar, though it’s a cracker now if you give it a moment to open up. The tannins aren’t too aggressive either, giving shape without proving scary.

Cap Royal Bordeaux Supérieur is a ‘sum of its parts’ sort of wine. Jean-René Matignon, winemaker at the renowned Chateau Pichon Baron, is in charge of the wine each vintage and uses his extensive connections in Bordeaux to source grapes from vineyards he sees fit for the year’s blend. This allows him to select the best fruit to achieve his vinous goal without being limited to one plot of land. The 2018 vintage is 75% merlot and 25% cabernet sauvignon. Intensely coloured with a nose of blackberry, blueberry and spice, the wine expresses more dark fruits, vanilla and toasted oak on the palate. It’s powerful and rich, yet refreshing.

Viña Undurraga has been operating continuously for over 130 years, making them one of the most important and historic wineries in all of Chile. What better place to start when dipping your toe into Chilean wine for the first time? This vivid and complex cabernet is cracking value for money. Ripe, red fruit flavour is enhanced by notes of cedar, vanilla and chocolate. The tannins are supple and soft, letting the energy of the fruit do the talking. It’s about as versatile a cabernet as you’re likely to find as well.

The term ‘revenant’ refers to someone or something that returns after a long absence. While this is the first cab sav we’ve had under this specific label (perhaps rendering the definition irrelevant to us), it does mark the return of wines from South African superstar producer False Bay. It’s sourced from Stellenbosch, a region famed for cabernet blends. There’s mostly cab sav in it with a decent portion of old vine cinsault to boot. The cab underwent a wild fermentation and the cinsault received carbonic maceration before being aged separately for nine months. The final 80/20 blend is beautifully complex, elegant and suprisingly soft with well-integrated tannins. We’re quite sure you’ll be returning to it again and again.

This is our best quaffing Coonawarra Cab. So approachable and, unlike many a Cabernet, ready to be enjoyed in its youth. Medium bodied yet dark in colour and plush berries over the palate, you can expect all the hallmarks and uniqueness that put Coonawarra on the map. Smooth texture and well integrated tannin work well alongside generous dashes of soft spice and a finish that’ll have you grabbing the bottle and investigating all the specs for yourself. Your wine journey isn’t complete without sampling all the Penley Estate has to offer and we feel this little gem is the best place to start. Bon voyage!
