Classic is the word that comes to mind when drinking this wine. Classic Yelland & Papps. Classic single vineyard Barossa shiraz made from old vines on the western ridge of the valley. There’s opulence, fruit weight, fine tannins and a long finish on this one. Wild yeast has been utilised before nearly two years in a mix of new and seasoned French and American oak. Plum, mulberry and clove jump out of the glass upon first whiff. The palate expands even further with vanilla, licorice, dark chocolate and graphite. Smoothness, complexity and depth all wrapped up in a velvety package. This is really, really good stuff.

Argentina is rightly famous for malbec, but they’re far from the only string to its bow. Variety is the spice of life, they say, and they do some damn good things with cabernets (amongst others) there, too. Not ready to abandon malbec completely, though? How about a compromise? Mix it up with a malbec cab franc blend. H.J. Fabre is one of the best at blending up reds, winning award after award for their work. This one boasts a well-deserved gold medal and 95 points. Time to dive in!

Now THIS is good wine! And it’s from the legendary Powell & Son out of the Barossa Valley - Icons of this iconic region if you will. It’s bright and juicy, with elegant tannin and layered complexity. The palate’s exploding with blackcurrant and raspberry compote, sweet red cherries and licorice. The splash of mataro adds a delightful medicinal undertone to this one - wine tonic for all your ailments. It’s plush enough for the winter, and will take a quick chill in the fridge well over summer.

Massena is without a doubt one of the most exciting wineries in South Australia. They are able to make dense wines that don’t come across as jammy whilst still packing in texture and structure. Pretty ideal for full-bodied reds if you ask me. Most of what they do is from the Barossa, but this cabernet comes from Langhorne Creek, a great spot for ripening the grape. It’s deep and dark, exhibiting cherry, blackcurrant, star anise, cloves, tobacco, spice and an earthy undertone. While we may be suckers for anything Massena produces, we’re yet to be proven wrong.

This is yet another incredibly smashable wine from the team at Santa & D’Sas, up in the King Valley. It’s a classic Italian rosso style red, made from shiraz, sangiovese and merlot. No need to get hung up on details with this one, but we will mention there is no oak, which means the pristine fruit is just singing! Drinkability is off the charts with bright red fruits, a soft mid-palate and smooth tannin. Whether you are dialling in or making from scratch, meat-lovers special or funghi delight - we say, pizza please!

This South Aussie shiraz has quite the following in the USA and has all the bold flavours and rich palate you would expect. It’s pronounced and powerful on the nose with toasted coconut oak notes from the time spent in American oak. The palate is full of dark chocolate, black cherries and plums in a rich and robust body. Tannins are present and beg for a delicious BBQ’d meat. If you like wine big and you like wine powerful, give this one a go.
