The Fortune shiraz is the top of the top when it comes to Padthaway shiraz, made by the always reliable team at Farmer’s Leap. The wine is dense and dark fruit, bold and sturdy. It’s a complex wine with chocolate, mocha and herbaceous notes on the nose. The palate is an filled with tannin, nutmeg, plums and berries, wrapped up in a velvety texture. This will cellar beautifully over the next 5-10 years and is at the start of its best drinking window and with so much density.

When I was part of the Dealer Team, chatting directly with mofos on the phone, this was without doubt one of the top 3 wines people asked for more of. It’s as intense, as complex, as high quality, as powerful as it is deeply, unendingly and immeasurably satisfying. A fanfare of Black Doris plum, blackberry, roasted nuts and spices, and super dark chocolate bursts onto the palate with the first sip. A cascade of supple tannin enhances the larger-than-life mouthfeel, with a bright flash of lively acidity to accompany. It’s sumptuous, opulent, decadent and however many other plush adjectives you care to throw at it. Plus it’ll cellar for a decade, easy. If you’ve not experienced it yet, you’re in for a wild ride!

Let me give you the lowdown on why we love this syrah from Hopesgrove. A few years ago the Wine Dealer team were absolutely obsessed with it. We waited with bated breath each time it came back around and mad scrambled to the phones to tell our clients that our favourite syrah is back! So after a few years, and many wines later, this stunning syrah has returned to us and we are stoked! It’s a classic expression of Hawke’s Bay, medium-bodied but with intense power. It’s elegant with silky tannins and savoury notes of white pepper and herbs.

Domaine de la Grosse-Pierre is a small producer making excellent gamay-based wines in France’s Beaujolais region. With access to old vines on granite soils, this is truely a case of the wines being made in the vineyard. In the winery, they practice a minimal intervention philosophy, which results in pure-fruited, vibrant and lively wines.

If you have ever tried the Merayo family’s estate mencia, you will know that they over deliver and then some! ‘Las Tres Filas’ means ‘The Three Rows’ and comes from a special patch of vines in their high altitude vineyards in Bierzo. This 95-point wonder of a wine was always destined for greatness. The vines are 80+ years old, adding depth and layers of flavour to the wine. The soil is rocky clay, which has added richness and mineral notes. Finally, there is just the right amount of French and American oak seasoning the wine.

Castelli Estate are one of those reliably consistent producers who we have come to love. They work across all of the classic Great Southern varieties - riesling, shiraz and in this case, a stunning cab sauv. This wine is silky smooth and approachable now, yet built to age for a decade or two. Classic medium-bodied, cool climate goodness.
