Salomon Estate is the Aussie branch of the Salomon empire based in Finniss River, SA. To say they know what they are doing is an understatement. This is a single vineyard, estate grown shiraz crafted in a style that is equal parts detailed and powerful. This wine has surprising elegance for its full-bodied style, likely due to the long growing season of 2017. It’s full of blackberries and spice, and a few cedar notes from around a third of the wine seeing new oak.

Here at Mofo, we are absolute Mitolo devotees. Across shiraz, grenache and Italian varieties, they make spectacular wines year in and year out. In the case of this wine, the 7th Son is a blend of grenache, shiraz and sagrantino. A GSS so to speak. 2017 was a cooler year, and this wine is all the better for it - sitting between medium and full and undeniably food-friendly wine. Time in older oak has added a great texture to the fruit tannin and the fruit ranges from puckering raspberries to dark spiced plums, and further spices of nutmeg and licorice dance across the palate. What a delight!

Signature Wines make modern wines from single vineyard sites in the cooler nooks of the Adelaide Hills, the coordinates for which you can find printed on their labels. This light to medium-bodied tempranillo has ‘approachable’ written all over it and is simply hard not to enjoy. Herbal and juicy on the nose with licks of mysterious earthen cacao and cola pair with lifted bright cherries and licorice.

Testimonio is sourced from 40-year old vines in Vistalba, the first wine area you encounter upon leaving the city of Mendoza. The grapes are hand-harvested, fermented under the strict watch of the winemaker and sent to rest in French oak for eight months. It’s bright, intense and voluptuous with typical Mendoza fruit and a backbone of vanilla from the time in barrel. Deep and elegant, this malbec will develop very well for next decade if you have the patience.

So, why is this wine great? It’s the combination of high altitude vineyards, organic management and that beautiful and consistent Mediterranean climate that makes growing season a dream. Old and young vines make for complexity, picked at the right time to balance fruit and acidity. It’s on the darker, moodier side of the grenache spectrum, with well integrated tannin and a structure that will benefit from an hour in a decanter. I’ve heard that 90% of wines in Europe are drunk with food. With this wine’s power and freshness, you can see why.

Backline is a passion project of three former Wallaby players who caught the wine bug while playing on French rugby teams. According to their website this wine has "a commitment to dark berry fruit and spice character with long fine tannins, giving the wine great balance and length". We love a committed wine.
