This wine comes from a single vineyard of century-old shiraz vines, farmed biodynamically and made with richness in mind, by the accomplished team at Paxton. It’s a very generous style, full of luscious fruit and muscular tannin. It was given the royal treatment in the winery, with fine-grained French and American oak, for all that toasty, creamy, vanilla-ey goodness, that sits in a bed of ripe plums, bright raspberries and nutmug spice.

The current owners of Los Frailes are the 13th generation of the Velázquez family to make wine there since they bought the place in 1771. In 2000, they were amongst the first wineries in Spain to become fully biodynamic. This wine is a 50-50 blend of syrah and monastrell, grown at over 600 metres the limestone-rich soils of their respective single vineyards. The monastrell was concrete-matured before seeing a touch of oak, while the syrah went straight into oak for 12 months. Because of this, they’ve struck a charming balance between ripeness and savouriness. The blend gives a variety of red and black fruit to the palate, with abundant spice and an earthy undertone. It’s a thoughtful wine, and bloody delicious.

For fans of Margaret River cabernet, it doesn’t get much better than this in terms of quality and value. We’ve got cabernet (with a touch of merlot, cab franc and petit verdot) from the exceptional 2017 vintage made by Higher Plane, a Five Red Star Halliday Rated Winery. It’s all from a single vineyard and sees 15 months in 20% new French oak before bottling. Think black and red currants, cherries and raspberries, all supported by vanilla, coffee and cinnamon from the oak treatment. Very varietal, very delicious.

This is refosco dal peduncolo, a variety native to Veneto, that has remained relatively obscure here in Australia. For lovers of pinot noir and nebbiolo though, this is definitely one to know. The wine is light in body, floral on the nose with voilet and iris, and follows through with plum, sour cherry, blackberry, flintiness and undergrowth on the palate. The tannins are soft and round, and a fresh minerality drives through to the finish. This is under-the-radar deliciousness here that will certainly impress fans of lighter reds.

Claymore wines are show off a fresher side to the Clare region, which is famous for dark and structured reds. This wine hints at the depth that Clare is capable of with their long growing season, but has a firm focus on smashability! It's full of plums and juicy red berries, with floral notes and the addition of the malbec that adds a bit of oomph!

We are big fans of Leconfield and their selection of wonderful wines. Though big fans of the cab sauv, it’s the cab franc that has really captured our attention. This is juicy and the very definition of ‘fruit forward’. Aromatic with plum, black fruit, strawberry and cherry too, smooth and silky, but broadened out nicely by some chunky-but-soft tannins.
