James Halliday
Five Star Halliday Rated winery

It makes sense that zinfandel thrives in the King Valley. The grape is an identical match to primitivo from Italy, and the KV is the Aussie home to Italian grapes. Zinfandel has the reputation for being rich, plump, jammy and opulent to the extreme - all good things. But it can also be hotter than a day in the desert and boozier than an Irish wedding. Both things this beautiful wine from Wood Park neatly avoids. If you like your wine full of full-fruited fun, accompanied by a good lick of American oak, but prefer it to not make your tequila look like a soda, this is just the ticket. Velvety cherries and berries, oak tannin and aroma, supple and satisfying. James Halliday is a fan and all.

Single Vineyard

Don’t let that fun label fool you - this is a pretty serious shiraz. It is made from a couple of vineyards in Clare Valley, with a minimum vine age of 35 years, and grapes were picked in several separate parcels to ensure perfect ripeness from each plot. The winemaking is what you’d call minimal intervention, with whole bunches fermenting in the open, feet used instead of machinery and only a splash of new oak. The results of the above are a delicious wine with bright, vibrant berries, mixing with pepper and spice, and fine tannin. More of a syrah than a shiraz really, light enough to drink without food, but with depth and detail to ponder.

5 red star Halliday rated winery

We’re super excited to have this wine in the shed. It's from Macedon icon Granite Hills and it speaks to all that makes Victorian cabernet blends special when made by talented folks. It’s from a cool climate, so the wine’s far from jammy. But there’s rampant complexity and incredible elegance that’ll impress damn near everyone. Dark, aromatic herbs and cedar, blackcurrant and supple leather, a gentle breath of eucalypt and some fine coffee-ground tannins. Born in one of the best vintages in recent times, it’s had ample time in bottle to settle down, and now the stage is set for magic in your glass.

Mofo Fave

To sum up the region of Great Southern in one word: Versatility. Covering such a large area, it’s one of the biggest and most isolated wine regions in the world. So many sub regions and micro climates with winemakers and viticulturalists alike having a field day (see what I did there?) down there. Chardonnay is on the front of their minds from its long but moderate sunny days to its cool crisp evenings. Harewood’s reserve chardonnay is a step up from the entry level range and gee is it worth the extra cash. Expect layers of texture and complexity and everything in complete balance, it’ll be great fun seeing where this wine goes with some extra time up its sleeve if you can wait, which we can’t, cos it’s drinking oh so damn fine right now.

Hand-Picked

This wine is one of the best examples of Australian sauvignon blanc. Terre a Terre spare no expense in their vineyards or winemaking, approaching both with the same high level of care and expertise. This wine was handpicked and some of the wine fermented in large format oak, resulting in a great texture and more depth than your average sauv. It is floral and pithy on the nose and fresh on the palate - super-long with great acid.

This is a delicious pinot gris from Nelson in the north of New Zealand’s wild South Island. It shows the classic Kiwi gris style with more richness and body than what you'd get from its Aussie counterparts. It's a slippery gris style with fresh orchard pear and white peach notes, along with jasmine, rosewater and fresh herbs on the nose.
