Mandala The Prophet Pinot Noir 2014
Yarra Valley, VIC
92pts Halliday Wine Companion | Five Star Halliday Rated Winery | Single Vineyard
Mandala has been quietly kicking goals in the Yarra for years. Those in the know (your faithful mofo wine buyers) have noticed and it’s time to spread the word. Here’s a perfectly aged single vineyard pinot noir that’s bit darker and a bit more brooding than your average Yarra strawberries-and-stems number. At Mandala, they do everything by hand, the oak is always the best French and the wines are always smart. 2014 was a good vintage, not too warm or cold, so expect a beautifully balanced wine in your glass. – Wine Buyer Ben

McLaren Vale. SA
Five Star Halliday Rated Winery | Boutique Producer | Minimal Intervention
I just love this producer - they are a family-run operation with each member playing to their strengths across sourcing grapes, making the wines and presenting them to the world. Their whites are never shy and the reds are always pure-fruited and sturdy on the palate. This wine has punchy blueberries from start to finish, surrounded bold tannins and a bit of liquorice spice. It finishes extra-long and composed, fading gently to a moreish savouriness. I can’t wait to get back to the Vale and see what their 2020s are tasting like. - Wine Buyer Beth

H.J. Fabre Reserva Malbec Cabernet Franc 2017
96pts International Wine Challenge 2019 | Gold Medal International Wine Challenge 2019 | Trophy Mendoza Red Blend, International Wine Challenge 2019 | Trophy Argentinian Red, International Wine Challenge 2019
I was lucky enough to visit Diane and Herve Fabre in Mendoza last year to check out what they do firsthand. Their vines are old, their depth of knowledge is vast and their hospitality is unrivalled. One of the main takeaways from my trip however, was that while Argentina is rightly famous for malbec, that’s far from the only string in its bow. Variety is the spice of life, they say, and they do some damn good things with cabernets (amongst others) there, too. Not ready to abandon malbec completely, though? How about a compromise? Mix it up with a malbec cab franc blend. – Wine Buyer Ben

Out of Step Willowlake Vineyard Sauvignon Blanc 2018
Yarra Valley, VIC
95pts Vinsomniac | Boutique Winery | Single Vineyard
If you ask anyone with intimate knowledge of Yarra producers to name the region’s sauv blanc master, they’ll probably pick out Dave over at Out of Step. He’s simply not content with your typical savvy b. He does a bit more with the fruit, giving it time in oak and some lees stirring. You get texture, structure, length and power to carry the varietal’s typical bright fruit flavours. While this 2018 is a new release, James Halliday has scored all his previous releases in the high 90’s. It’s a sauv blanc for the sophisticated wine snob set. Pass on this wine and it’s your loss. It’s simply that good. – Wine Buyer Ben

Hungerford Hill Chardonnay 2016
95pts National Wine Show 2018 | 95pts Tumbarumba Wine Show 2017 | 95pts Canberra National Wine Show 2018 | 95pts NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show 2018 | Top Gold Rutherglen Wine Show 2017 | Gold National Wine Show 2018 | Gold Medal Tumbarumba Wine Show 2018 | Gold Canberra National Wine Show 2018 | Gold Medal NSW Small Winemakers Wine Show 2018
I love saying Tumbarumba. I love drinking chardonnay from Tumbarumba. I love drinking chardonnay from Tumbarumba made by Hungerford Hill. Based on the wine’s incredible performance in the show circuit, I’m certainly not the only one. It has everything and then some. A vibrant peaches and cream nose let you know you’re drinking chardonnay and the acid speaks clearly of Tumbarumba’s cold nights. In the winery, a combination of lees stirring and French oak have given the wine weight and texture, but it’s still super fruity in a grown-up Chardonnay way. – Wine Buyer Ben

Goodman Vermentino 2016
91pts James Halliday | Five Star Halliday Rated Winery
Kate Goodman! What a legend! Across Victoria and South Australia, Kate makes thoughtful, precise and delicious wines. This Heathcote vermentino from 2016 is looking the absolute goods. Subtle, yet complex with a few developed aromas, similar to a cellared riesling; broadening out with layers of almond kernel, green olive and citrus pith. The palate has an oily texture, lots of pear and a lingering lemon baked in butter note - hell yeah, who said you can’t age vermentino? - Wine Buyer Beth
