White Burgundy Lineup 6.0

Maybe it’s just me, mofos, but I feel like white Burgundy hasn’t been getting the same frenzied adulation as its red counterpart in recent years. Don’t get me wrong, the prices for your Chassagne-Montrachets of the world have certainly not been affected, even if it is true. Perhaps with the proliferation of real world-class chardy regions all over the globe, the attention is just being shared that smidge more. We’d do well not to forget the white Burgundy wonders that are out there then.
This pack is a mixed six of the best value Burgundies you’re likely to find from the thin strip of wine-growing heaven in eastern France. If you’ve not been giving Burgundy all the love it deserves lately, this’ll remind you exactly why these chardies are still king.
Every case contains ONE bottle of each of the following:

This is the type of find you want to discover when it comes to white Burgundy. One that tastes like it’s from the next level. Burgundy lovers are always looking for a Premier Cru that tastes like a Grand Cru, or the vineyard next door that’s cheaper - and equally good as its neighbour. Here you have a regional ‘Bourgogne’ that has the mettle to challenge ‘Villages’ wine quality. It’s definitely a step up compared to its classification. And that’s good for your palate and your pocket. Fresh and lively with jaunty acidity, dive in nose first and savour this wine’s summer blossom, frangipani and citrus pith. There’s no letting up on the palate. It’s all here - citrus rind and lime, fresh orchard apples and pears, with fine stone fruit acidity. Bang on Bourgogne!

The Chablis equation is fairly simple. Chardonnay grapes + Kimmeridgian soils + cold climate = delicious oyster lubricant. No messing around in this part of France. The results are stupendous. Clean, clear minerality, with lovely wet slate notes and cucumber freshness. Absolutely to die for on a hot summer’s day. This’ll grow in complexity and depth over the next seven years or so, though it’s absolutely none the weaker if drunk now.

It’s not often that we see white Burgundy of this calibre, at this price, so we suggest you read on... Domaine Charton is a family run producer in Burgundy’s Côte Chalonnaise, an area famous for chardonnay. The star is their young gun winemaker, the son Vincent, who is breathing new life into the generations old Domaine. This is a full and textural wine, with generous fruit and fresh acidity. The grapes are picked at the perfect time then go through fermentation and ageing in barrel, 15% new. The result of this winemaking is a lovely, textural wine with only the most subtle oaky notes. There is citrussy acid driving the wine, stone fruit, floral notes and a faint orange oil note. If you are a chardonnay fan who likes the finer things in life, we suggest hitting that button sooner than later.

This ticks all the boxes for a cracking, approachable Chablis. The classic pairing for this wine is with oysters. We like to avoid the banal here at the ‘fo, but my word do you end up craving them after a glass of this. Be prepared and get a couple dozen in. The palate is clean, crisp and almost spiritual in purity. Green apple, aloe, cucumber and oyster shell, with notes of saline minerality that sing of terroir. If you’re pouring this, we’ll be happy to do all the shucking.

For fans of medium-bodied, but intensely-flavoured chardonnay, this Bourgogne Blanc suits perfectly. The fruit is sourced from a northwesterly facing slope, harvested late in the season and allowed to go through malolactic fermentation before aging in vats ahead of bottling. The wine is a medium gold in colour with an aroma of green apples and citrus, supported by floral notes, all of which are balanced on the palate with a driving mineral finish.

This Bourgogne Blanc from Domaine de la Madone is from the far south in Beaujolais. While you may be thinking the south is warmer, the vineyards are high altitude and hilly, which means cooler nights, greater complexity and driving acidity. This paired with plenty of daytime sunshine and you’ve got a beautiful balanced wine. It is ridiculously good value for a bottle full of classic chardonnay - fresh citrus, crisp pear and lovely mineral notes.
